Diverse Traveller writing group - describing a memory (test post)

Much of writing is a case of show don't tell, and as someone new to writing I find this aspect very challenging.

Below I share my frustration and read an excerpt from Lost In Place : Growing up absurd in suburbia by Mark Salzman, found in 365 Travel: A Daily Book of Journeys, Meditations and Adventures (Body & Soul);  an except I feel the author, simply but evocatively, communicates a childhood travel memory.
