Charleston: South Carolina's city of history
The state's emblem is the palmetto, which is not an ice cream but a smallish mop-headed tree. There are lots of them around, obstructing golfers and tickling the shoulders of polite Charleston society as it sips its drinks on the balcony and enjoys the harbour view, but this is not why South Carolina puts the palmetto on its number plates, nickels and dimes.
