A day of football and memories with Auntie Ola

P1020007 Had a great day at Chelsea football club yesterday with my three nephews, Kenneth (12), Zach (10) and Oliver (8). The tour was mainly for recent birthday boys, Kenneth and Oliver.

Chelsea fans?

Kenneth is the real Chelsea fan, often going to games with his 'equally deluded' Uncle David. Oliver is a floating fan, he can't make up his mind whether to follow his father and support Queens Park Rangers (QPR) or follow most of his classmates and opt for the in fashion Chelsea. Zach, well he's not into sports, but didn't want to be left out, especially as we were having a picnic lunch.

From the mouth of babes!

The boys were not impressed with the Chelsea shop. 'Who'd want a chelsea toaster?' Kenneth asked distainfully. And they baulked at the cost of the medium sized chelsea football short shaped bag of sweets @ £2.29. This bag was full of air and very few sweets. 'Naw! you can get loads more in Asda Auntie Ola', Oliver loudly informed me and the rest of the shoppers.

New Chelsea fans

After seeing both changing rooms, Zach asked me, "How come they give the away team a horrible changing room, it's not very nice." Elvis told him giving the away team the most basic changing room that is slightly uncomfortable happens everywhere. On seeing the luxury of the Chelsea first team changing room, Oliver defined his loyalties. "How old do you have to be to join Chelsea?", he asked our guide Elvis. "You can start at nine", Elvis replied, "but you have to be good at English, maths, etc". I smiled at Oliver, "Well, you've still got a year to start playing football and to improve your school work". He looked pensive for a few seconds that declared, "I'm going to support Chelsea".

Highlights

Our tour favourities (yes for me too) were:

1. Tour of the home and away dressing rooms. They couldn't believe how basic the home changing rooms were when compared to the Chelsea first team one. Oh they have so much to learn about life!

2. Jogging out of the players tunnel to pitch-side, then sitting in the managers seat. As one of three non-Chelsea fans, I was the way team captain - Liverpool captain, Stevie Gerrard :)

3. Our guide Elvis, who was ever so patient with the flood of questions from Zach and Oliver.

Watch a photo video of our day below.

At the end of the tour we took a picture with replicas of the FA cup and the recently won Charity Shield.

Picnic in the park

After the tour we greedily ate out lunch in sun-filled Hyde Park, coincidently near the July 07 2005 memorial.

I told the boys the story (don't worry I didn't scare them), and tried to honestly answer their resultant questions. Their verdict - hey thought the memorial was a good one.

It had been a long day, but one that was enjoyable not only because of the tour and the picnic but we had great family time. They are now looking forward to their next day out with Auntie Ola.
