Book_the writingcoach Date: March 28th, 2009
Time: 9.00am to 12.30pm
Venue: Regents College, Central London

Presenter: Jurgen Wolff

Some of the key points covered on this course regarding non-fiction books:

  • the best time to approach a publisher
  • how to sell your non-fiction book with only a proposal
  • exactly what needs to go into the proposal - and what you must not say
  • when you need an agent - and when it’s better to go it alone
  • the best way to pitch feature stories and articles
  • how to make one piece of writing serve you six times
  • where the opportunities are for writing online
  • how to make money writing press releases and corporate material
  • when to consider self-publishing and the best way to do it
  • whether and how to use a blog, a podcast, and social media
  • how to establish yourself as a brand - and why you must
  • how to sell information products on the internet.

Attendees were given hand-outs full of additional resources (including a full sample book proposal that led to a publishing contract).  I am currently going through the hand-out and will share some of the information provided here, soon.

Jurgen Wolff's brief background: eight books, most recently Focus: the power of targeted thinking (Pearson) and Your Writing Coach (Nicholas Brealey Publishing), with two coming out later this year, also various articles for newspapers and magazines (including The San Francisco Chronicle and Writers Digest), and over 100 episodes of television.

Coincidently, I didn't realise 'till I got to the classroom, that I had bought one of Jurgen's books back in 2005 - Do something different.
