Over the last two posts I have shared with you my 'interesting' recession-busting travel tips. Today. I'm going to share with you my favourite travel tips, that are free or cost very little, and don't involve getting on a plane or train.
1. Travel by the book. I love reading and now I am into audiobooks, so it's no surprise that most of the books I read have a destination as their central theme. This year, Africa is my destination. I have already visited post war Sierra Leone via The House on Sugar Beach; searched for King Solomon's mines in Ethiopia, and stepped back in time to traditional EWE Ghana.
2. Films. I belong to a DVD club, and for £14.99 a month get to travel wherever I want to. So far, I have travelled to India via Slum Dog Millionaire; Australia via ... Australia, and Rio de Janerio via Central Station
3. World music. If you pass my flat, especially on a gloomy days, you will hear winter-defying African music. On those days, you'll find me gyrating furiously to Afro-beat by Fela Anikulapo Kuti & Egypt 80, Makossa such as by Manu Dibango and Soukous such as by Dany Engobo and his band (great for toning my abs and hips).
4. Podcasts. There are many travel podcasts available for your i-gadgets and MP3 player. I have 100s of travel podcasts on my ipod, such as Amateur traveler, The Independent’s travel podcast service and Holiday Goddess. And of course there are travel and geography programmes on TV and radio. One to watch out for is The real Swiss Family Robinson on BBC1, Fridays at 9pm.
5. Travel via DiverseTraveller.com. I am so grateful to the over 200 women who have shared travel experience with Diverse Traveller readers. I regularly travel all over the world by trawling through the archive holding over 400 short travel stories and features. And, I am looking for more, so please contribute and help me spread the DiverseTraveller.com word.
Finally, if all else fails, enter as many travel competitions as you can. I have entered over 20, and sadly, still waiting.
Please share your 'interesting' recession-busting travel tips; the best one will win something from the Diverse Traveller shop.
