Travel media needs more colour
March 22 2010 , Written by thediversetraveller Published on #"womenofcolour" traveler, #DiverseTraveller.com, #DiverseTraveller.com - Women Who Travel, Write, Snap & Share, #OlaFagbohun, #Recommendations & Rants (tips, links and reviews), #travel, #traveller, #womentravel, #worldoftravel
For years, my view of travel was one of either scruffy, white, middle-class, middle-aged, and male travellers or middle-class white women who could afford to 'take time out'. Now I'm not knocking them as I enjoy reading and watching their travels. But, after years of travelling as a black woman, I want to see travel writers, presenters (and I don't mean the odd celebrity of colour) and travellers interviewed on TV and radio that reflect travellers of all colours (and abilities).
As much as I love visiting new cities, taking in new sights and smells, and meeting new people (especially women), I am always consciousness that I am travelling as a double minority - a black women.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a black traveller with a large chip on my shoulder, would take me over the baggage allowance anyway, I love travelling and throw myself into the experience, whether travelling alone or with a travel group. And, neither am I on a race or multiculturalism high horse.
It's not the travelling while black that bothers me, after all I'm not the only one, it's the distinct lack of colour in travel media. Don't believe me? Next time you pop in to your favourite bookstore (on and offline), check out the travel book section and travel magazines. And don't get me started on TV and radio travel programmes.
And, I'm not the only one who has noticed this, over the years I have met, bumped into or had online chats with women travellers of colour. While sharing travel experiences, we have decried the lack of colour in travel media.
This issue has been raised and commented on over the years, and I am raising it again; I am encouraging women travellers of colour to share your travel experiences, on DiverseTraveller.com, or if in other places (blog, forums, chats, videos, facebook, etc) please tell me where. After all, if we don't shout, we won't be heard or seen, and I for one refuse to allow this mess to continue.
Now's the time to raise your voice and share your diverse thoughts on this subject. I want to hear from women travellers of colour, and from any other women traveller 'group' not adequately represented in the world of travel. Don't be shy now!
