Spontaneous day trip to Canterbury, Kent

It may not be Spain, but a day trip to Canterbury will go some way to help me forget Icelandic volcanos and cancelled flights.

Rather than let this week go to waste. I am already doing more work this week, as people assume I have more time on my hands, than I would have done if I had planned to be here.

So on Monday, I called up my chum Rachel, she was supposed to be in Germany. I suggested we commiserate together by making use of her gold rail card, gives her 35% off rail travel, and get out of London for a day. Destination - Canterbury.

Why Canterbury?

Friends who have visited, and the official tourism website, herald Canterbury as a great place to visit and explore. It's famous for its history, heritage, stunning architecture and world famous buildings including the ancient ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church, Canterbury's UNESCO World Heritage Site. Plus it is by the sea, further material for my forth-coming series of articles on stylishly cheap day trips from London to the sea.
