#World Cup sibling envy

It's not often I am envious of anyone, but this month I'm surprised I don't turn into the the incredible hulk (or should that be sulk) every time the World Cup is mentioned. The reason, I let rationale stop me from joining my brother in South Africa.

Let me explain

When South Africa won the right to hold the World Cup, my youngest brother, David, and I agreed we would be there following Nigeria, easier tickets to get hold off. being typical Fagbohuns, we failed to plan in time, and before we knew it 2010 arrived on the back of a global.

We "ummed and aaed" whether to go, mainly because of the cost. David was working, but I wasn't, so despite a late start in April, David made travel plans and by end of May he was ready to go; meanwhile my inner hulk grew and grew.

Each day as the build up to kick-off grew, and David's leaving date got closer, I told myself I had made made the rational choice, after all would it be worth it to party in South Africa and have an experience of a life time only to return to homelessness.

To make myself feel better, I had hoped to be writing this from the breath-taking Tuscany countryside, but once again my reluctance to plan ahead has cost me dearly; every B&B I try and book, Milan and Tuscany, can only accommodate me for a few days. So I am well and truly stuck in London

Making the best of things

Being a I am a glass half full person, I intend to put behind me thoughts of vuvuzelas and Italian architecture and roam around London to squeeze every last atmospheric drop and fanatic experience from this World Cup. Thus, despite the foolishness of Boris Johnson (why no big screens around town, Boris?) I shall be sampling some of London's international-flavoured venues spending time with supporters of different countries. So far ...

Saturday June 12th: Argentina vs. Nigeria and England vs. USA

Family gathering, including David via mobile, where in honour of the countries playing our lunch consisted of:

Argentinian burgers and Chimichurri Sauce
US style French fries
Nigerian fried rice
English apple crumble and cornish ice-cream
US Drinks - Sprite and root beer

Tuesday, June 15th: Brazil vs North Korea

I joined many Brazilian fans at the World Cup Carnival 2010, Shepherd's bush. Celebrating their success with two very strong and very sweet Caipirinha

In the meantime, David is having a great time in South Africa, and through phone calls and text messages I can pretend I am there too.
