Circolombia: URBAN - a circus like no other

April 15 2011 , Written by thediversetraveller Published on #Circo Para Todos, #Circolombia: URBAN, #Circus, #Columbia, #London, #Performance, #Recommendations & Rants (tips, links and reviews), #Roundhouse

Following a glowing recommendation from a friend, this evening I'll be taking a 90 minute trip to urban Colombia to watch a circus act, by way of the Roundhouse theatre, London.

However, I have been told to forget everything I know and think about about circuses. Circolombia is nothing like the animal jumping circus we remember as a child. Circolombia is gritty, modern, full of attitude and comprised of a motley crew of exuberant young artists, whose awe-inspiring acrobatic prowess is matched by their high voltage energy.

Following a sell-out run as part of Roundhouse CircusFest in April 2010, Circolombia are back with a reworking of Urban for 2011.

Urban features some of the best performers from Circo Para Todos (Circus For All), Colombia's national circus school and the first professional circus school in the world for disadvantaged young people, which produces world-class performers.

Set against the backdrop of the Colombian city Cali, Urban weaves through the dark street life, with a freestyle portrait of society, incorporating both joy and violence where dance and music are the safety valves of everyday life. With a pounding live reggaeton soundtrack, raw contemporary aesthetic and volcanic force, Urban is truly unforgettable.

Sadly, this is the last day of the performance. If you can't join me this evening, enjoy a sample of what I shall be seeing in the video below.
