Procrastinating Ola

Queen of procrastination

MP900341465 Each morning I awake to pray for the day on BBC Radio 4, and usually spend the following hours planning to do things I knew would never get done.

But today was different. Today, I sprung out of bed, I had a good feeling that today was going to be the most productive day I've had in weeks.

Not only was I going to help my friend, Senait, with her job application, I was going to finish and publish the ten blog posts gathering digital dust in the drafts section of this blog.

Good intentions

Sipping a large cup of strong coffee and intermittently dunking Ginger Nuts, I spent an hour and a half with Senait on the phone, editing her job application, English is not her first language. Task one complete.

It was still early, I had plenty of time to tackle my outstanding blog posts, so I installed a new web cam, downloaded my emails, searched for my fashionable reading glasses, prepared a well researched shopping list, then emptied the dish drying rack; I am sure gremlins visit me at night to chip my cups and plates.

Satisfied, my day was well on track, it was time to get out of my mis-matched pyjamas and tune-up my concentration skills with a protein-rich breakfast.

Procrastination - the thief of my time

102350513_13b7623ab5_o Sadly, I didn't realise that my day of good intentions was fast coming to an end.

Breakfast - a toasted fried egg sandwich and another cup of coffee - required both hands, so there was no point eating at my PC. Time to multi-task or in lay-man's terms, eat while catching up on my Sky Plus programmes.

Over a very long breakfast, I watched three episodes of House, two Criminal Minds and another hilarious episode of Curb Your Enthusiam. Before I knew it I had spent five and a half hours with a brilliant, arrogant and selfish doctor who enjoyed his bouts of very dark humour, a number of serial killers, and a man who thought getting his TiVo fixed was more important that taking a call from his wife, she thought she was going to die as her plane flew through turbulence.

Ok! It didn't take me five hours to eat; during that time, I also replied and deleted emails, downloaded season one and two of BBC political comedy The Thick of It, and searched for a solution to why my (Mac) iMovie videos look so grainy on YouTube.

I then downloaded and read RSS feeds from eMarketer.com and Clickz.com - to keep abreast of news in the digital marketing world, and followed new Twitterers who are now following me.

Exhausted, and a little brain dead, it was time for nourishment, time for tea.

More time theft

While sipping tea and dunking Rich Tea biscuits, the Mcvities factory is five minutes away, and the smell ... see I just can't stay on point. Back to the sipping and dunking, I read more online articles about social media trends from Mashable.com on social media trends.

Still on Sky Plus mode I did all the above with the film 84 Charing Cross Road in the background. This is such a charming movie that I found myself paying more attention to it than I had anticipated. Who knows perhaps like author Helene Hanff, played by Anne Morecraft, I could end up writing blog posts to strangers, for years, in the hope someone will be interested enough to write back not once but for decades; oh dear! I digress once again.

The end is nigh!

It's now 15.30. While I have watched enough TV programmes to get my Sky Plus storage from 69% to 95%, found a solution for my video uploading problem, helped out a friend and caught up on social media marketing trends, I have not even peaked at the ten draft blog items I set out to publish this morning.

Like many people who set out to write, it's not writers block that impedes us, it's the discipline to write regularly without succumbing to distractions. Like procrastinators worldwide, I am not beating myself about this, as there's always tomorrow.

I leave you to ponder those wise words as I go in search of something for my late lunch, which, I plan to watch while doing research, i.e watching Global Trekker in Venice., (yes, it's in my Sky Plus).

So my fellow readers, what have you been doing today instead of writing, or any other activity?

O
So true! Added to that my biggest issue, as you can guess from my post, is discipline. I have recently signed up for a four week creative writing course. After just one lesson I have already learned and applied a technique that gets me writing a page, mainly jibberish, a day. Will be in touch soon to tell you more. Best of luck. Ola
I can't begin to tell you how much I can relate to this article! I think also (actually, I know also) that fear of failure and fear of negative criticism are key reasons for not just doing it.
